Our process of designing and installing a retaining wall

The construction of every retaining wall begins with a comprehensive consultation. We meet with our clients to understand their needs and budget. It’s a crucial step, allowing us to deliver optimal service for customer satisfaction.

During the design phase, we use the gathered data, including the client’s requirements and the nature of the worksite, to create a clear plan of construction for the retaining wall.
The final step involves bringing the client’s approved design to life. It involves multiple steps, depending on the nature of the wall, including digging a trench, installing the footer, installing drainage, layering geogrid reinforcement, building up the retaining wall block, and gluing the cap.

How We Build Our Belgard Retaining Walls

1. Excavation

We dig a 24” wide trench that allows room for the necessary base materials and allows for some of the retaining wall to be below the surface.
2. Installing the base

Geotextile stabilization fabric goes into the trench to separate the gravel from the dirt and further stabilize the soil. Then we install and compact a gravel footer to provide a strong base for the wall.
3. Leveling the first row

Each block on the base row must be level in all directions and level with the adjacent block. We use non-marring dead blow hammers to hit each block into place, checking with torpedo levels so each block is exactly as it should be. Achieving a level base is key for an attractive and strong wall.
4. Installing drainage

Each wall needs clean gravel behind it to allow water to flow into a drainage pipe at the bottom of the wall. This drainage relieves the hydrostatic pressure to be relieved and prevents wall failure. Our drainage stone extends at least 12” from the wall and approximately 4” from the surface. It is covered with drainage fabric to allow water to flow into the drainage system but keeps dirt out.
5. Stacking the wall

As the wall is stacked, we check that it is level, and install gravel in the overlapping hollow cores of the blocks to lock them together.
6. Geogrid

Taller walls or walls holding excessive loads require “geogrid” installed between every other row of blocks. It is rolled back into the soil behind the wall, locking the wall into the soil behind the drainage system. Doing this allows us to build strong walls that will last a lifetime.
7. Caps

By cutting caps around curves, we set out caps attractively with a slight overhang over the blocks. We glue them with premium structure bond adhesive, and the wall is complete.
